MARGARINE LOWERS CHILDREN’S IQ

Margarine lowers the IQ of children. According to researchers at the University of Auckland, children who ate margarine everyday had significantly lower IQ scores by the age of 31/2 than those who did not.

In their recent study [Intelligence, 2009; 37(5):506-513], the researchers collected data on nearly 900 children for the first 7 years of their lives. The main concern of the scientists was the children’s dietary intake. By using IQ tests, the researchers were able to link several types of food with either increases or decreases in intelligence.

The biggest brain drain represented in the study was margarine, which had a significant negative correlation with intelligence as measured through the tests. The data indicated that eating margarine less than 1 time each day improved IQ test scores by about 4 points.

But margarine might not be the only food to avoid. The researchers theorized that it was the trans fatty acid content that caused the reductions in intelligence.
